The worm grinding wheels, which are often large and weigh up to 60 kg, consist of geometrically indeterminate cutting edges and a polycrystalline surface. In addition to profile shape and pitch, angles, radii and distances are measured, directly on the worm grinding wheels or on the infeed coupon.
Further parameters are grain size, grain protrusion and contact ratio of the ground surface. Tolerances of approx. 20 µm lead to high demands on the measurement uncertainty. The measuring time plays a subordinate role. The partly highly reflective, partly transparent surface must be taken into account in the measurement.
