The worm grinding wheels, which are often large and weigh up to 60 kg, consist of geometrically indeterminate cutting edges and a polycrystalline surface. In addition to profile and pitch, angles, radii and distances are measured directly on the worm grinding wheels or on the grinding coupon.
Other parameters include grain size, grain protrusion and contact ratio of the grinding surface. Tolerances of approx. 20 µm lead to high demands on the measurement uncertainty. The measuring time plays a subordinate role. During measurement, the highly reflective and sometimes transparent surface must be taken into account.
